Capt Patrick Porteous, VC (1918–2000), No 4 Commando, Royal Artillery, for distinguished service in the Dieppe raid of World War II in August 1942, was awarded the highest British military honour, the Victoria Cross. He later achieved the rank of Colonel, retiring from the Army in 1970, and had the honour of being in the leading car at the late Queen Mother's 100th Birthday Parade, before his death in August 2000.
