Traditional Porteous Coat-of-Arms

MEMORIALS AND CEMETERIES

A list of all known Porteous memorials or cemeteries where Porteous family members are remembered.

Many of the following 95 cemeteries and 24 memorials, where members of the Porteous family are buried or have their name inscribed, are the sole responsibility of The Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

In a number of cases, however, especially where graves are situated in municipal cemeteries or church graveyards, the responsibility of the Commission only extends to those graves in which are buried servicemen and women who died as a result of warfare within the qualifying periods, which in the case of World War I was 4th August 1914 to 31st August 1921. For World War II the period was 3rd September 1939 to 31st December 1947.
Whilst the level of maintenance undertaken in the large wargrave cemeteries in the major war theatres remains of a high standard, in the smaller municipal cemeteries and

churchyards this often only stretches to an occasional cleaning of the headstone and a reliance on Local or Church Authorities to undertake a more regular maintenance of the individual graves and their surrounding area.

Only the name of the cemetery or memorial, occasionally the district, and the country are listed below. A full address, together with a layout of each cemetery can be read in The Commonwealth War Graves Commission Registers which are held in major libraries. Alternatively, information can be obtained from the Commission at:
